Rivers Tutoring – What We Cover During the Year

Our 46-week programmes provide broad, structured coverage of key primary Maths, English, and Science concepts, delivered through clear, visual, SEN-friendly 40-minute lessons with regular recaps and reviews.

💚 A Gentle, Rolling Programme

Children are welcome to join at any point in the programme.

They do not need to have attended every previous lesson. We regularly recap important prior learning, and our visual, step-by-step approach means children can join in at the level that feels manageable for them.

As the programme cycles around, children who continue attending will gradually experience the broad range of topics we explore.

Ages 6–8

🔢 Number & Place Value: Counting, numbers to 100 and beyond, tens and ones, place value and comparing numbers.

➕ Addition & Subtraction: Building from calculations within 20 to adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers.

✖️ Multiplication & Division: Building confidence with times tables, equal groups, sharing and related division facts.

🍰 Fractions: Exploring halves, quarters and thirds, comparing fractions and using fractions on number lines.

📏 Measurement & Everyday Maths: Length, mass, capacity, time, money, perimeter and practical problem-solving.

🔷 Shape, Position & Data: 2D and 3D shapes, direction, turns, pictograms, tally charts and simple graphs.

Ages 9–11

🔢 Number & Place Value: Large numbers, place value, comparing and ordering, rounding and negative numbers.

🔤 Phonics & Early Reading: Short and long vowels, CVC words, blends, digraphs and building reading confidence.

✍️ Sentences & Punctuation: Capital letters, full stops, question marks, exclamation marks and building clear sentences.

📝 Grammar & Vocabulary: Nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, tenses and word-building.

📖 Reading & Comprehension: Listening, sequencing, retelling, retrieval, inference, prediction and understanding new vocabulary.

💡 Creative Writing: Characters, settings, story planning, beginnings, plots, dialogue and endings.

📚 Writing for Different Purposes: Short paragraphs, instructions, recounts, letters, postcards and poetry.

Ages 9–11

📖 Reading & Comprehension: Retrieval, inference, prediction, themes, summarising, fact and opinion, vocabulary and comparing texts.

🔎 Reading Like a Writer: Exploring author choices, figurative language, character, setting, atmosphere and poetry.

✍️ Creative & Non-Fiction Writing: Paragraphs, dialogue, stories, persuasive writing, explanations, instructions, reports, letters and recounts.

📝 Grammar: Tenses, relative clauses, active and passive voice, modal verbs and sentence transformation.

🌍 Earth & Space: Earth and the Solar System, natural disasters and exploring the possibility of life beyond Earth.

📅 Our 46-Week Learning Schedule

At Rivers Tutoring, I run our small, supportive learning clubs across 46 weeks of the year. As a home-educating family ourselves, this flexible structure allows me to provide consistent learning support while maintaining a healthy family life.

Here's what this means for you and your child:

• 🌱 Join at Any Time: Our learning clubs follow a rolling 46-week programme, so children are welcome to join at any point during the year. Each lesson is carefully planned to be accessible on its own, while also building knowledge, skills and confidence over time. As children continue attending, they will gradually experience the broad range of topics covered across the programme.

• 📚 Gentle, Continuous Learning: Sessions run throughout most of the year, offering children regular opportunities to learn, practise and revisit key concepts without the pressure of having to keep up. Our programmes provide broad coverage of key learning areas, with regular recap and review built in.

• 💙 Built-In Flexibility: Life happens! If your child occasionally misses a session, they can simply rejoin with the current week's learning. We regularly recap previous learning, and because the programme runs on a rolling cycle, topics will come around again over time.

• 📅 Transparent Planning: Our 46-week schedule allows me to take planned time with my own family while continuing to offer consistent support throughout the year. I'll always give families as much advance notice as possible of any planned breaks.
